“Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point.”

“Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point.” โ€” Alcoholics Anonymous (1939) · Chapter 5 · How It Works
Where it comes from

From the opening of Chapter 5 โ€” the passage read aloud at the start of thousands of meetings every day, just before the Twelve Steps are listed.

Today’s reflection

Most of us tried moderation, geography changes, and willpower-only long before we tried surrender. Those were the half measures. This line isnโ€™t a scolding โ€” itโ€™s a relief. It says you can stop negotiating. Standing at the turning point simply means being done bargaining with the thing thatโ€™s beating you. Today, notice one place youโ€™re still holding back โ€œa little,โ€ and consider what letting go of that last reservation might feel like.

Frequently asked questions

Dallas Recovery: Common Questions

How much does sober living cost in Dallas?
Sober living in Dallas typically costs $500-$3,000 per month depending on location, amenities, and structure level. Shared rooms range $500-$1,200/month while private rooms and luxury facilities can cost $2,000-$5,000/month. See the full Dallas cost breakdown →
What is the difference between sober living and rehab?
Rehab provides intensive clinical treatment including therapy, medical care, and detox services, typically lasting 30-90 days. Sober living homes are transitional residences providing structured, substance-free environments focusing on real-world reintegration while maintaining sobriety with peer support.
How long do people stay in sober living homes?
The average stay is 3-6 months, though many residents stay 6-12 months or longer. Research shows longer stays (90+ days) significantly improve long-term recovery outcomes.
What should I look for when choosing a sober living home?
Key factors include: house rules and structure that match your needs, regular drug testing policies, location near Dallas support groups and employment, qualified staff, positive peer community, clear pricing with no hidden fees, and NARR certifications.
How do I find the right recovery program in Dallas?
Consider the type of treatment needed (detox, inpatient, outpatient, sober living), insurance coverage, location preferences, and specialized programs. Browse directory listings in Dallas and call providers to confirm current availability, services, and payment options.
Do facilities in Dallas accept insurance?
Many treatment centers and detox facilities in Dallas accept major insurance plans including Medicaid, Medicare, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare. Sober living homes typically require private pay but some partner with treatment centers for covered clinical components.
